Mesh tape is self-sticking and easier to embed in flat joints, but it has no strength across the joint. When the building settles or the framing moves even a little, mesh tape cracks right down the middle of the joint. Paper tape, especially pre-creased paper tape for inside corners, has tensile strength that bridges the joint and holds it together through minor movement.
The rule is simple: paper tape for inside corners, mesh for flat joints if you prefer it. Many pros use paper tape for everything because it is stronger and cheaper. If your inside corners are cracking, switch to paper tape and use a corner trowel to embed it properly. The corner trowel holds the crease in the right place while you embed the tape in the mud.
Flashing is when the joints show through the paint as shiny or dull spots under certain lighting. It happens because the joint compound and the paper face of the drywall absorb paint at different rates. If you paint directly over unprimed drywall, the joints absorb more paint and look different from the rest of the wall.
The fix is a coat of PVA drywall primer before the topcoat. PVA primer seals the drywall and the joints so they absorb paint at the same rate. If you are using flat or eggshell paint, you might get away without primer, but if you are using satin, semi-gloss, or gloss paint, the flashing will show. Always prime. It is cheap insurance against a repaint job.
The ceiling sheets need to rest on something solid. If you hang the walls first, the ceiling sheets rest on the wall edges, which creates a weak joint that can crack when the building settles. If you hang the ceilings first, the wall sheets push up tight against the ceiling sheets, creating a tight, supported joint that holds together.
The trick is to use a drywall lift for the ceilings if you are working alone. A drywall lift holds the sheet up while you screw it in, so you do not have to hold it up with one hand and screw with the other. If you do not have a lift, rent one for the day. It saves your back and makes the ceiling job go much faster.
Screw pops happen when the screw head breaks through the paper face of the drywall after the job is done. It happens because the screw was not driven deep enough, or the framing moved and pulled the screw out. The fix is to drive the screw so the head is just below the surface of the paper, creating a small dimple but not breaking the paper.
If a screw pops after the job is done, drive another screw an inch or two away from the popped screw, then mud over both screw heads. Do not try to push the popped screw back in; it will just pop again. The new screw holds the drywall tight to the framing, and the mud hides both screw heads.
All-purpose compound is the workhorse: it sticks well, sands well, and works for all three coats if you are doing a Level 4 finish. Topping compound is lighter and sands easier, but it does not stick as well as all-purpose. Many pros use all-purpose for the taping coat and topping for the fill and top coats.
If you are doing a Level 5 finish with a skim coat, use topping compound or a lightweight all-purpose for the skim coat because it sands easier. All-purpose is harder to sand smooth, and a skim coat needs to be feathered out to nothing. For a Level 4 finish, all-purpose for all three coats is fine and cheaper.
A 12 by 12 room with an 8-foot ceiling has about 432 square feet of drywall (384 sq ft of walls plus 144 sq ft of ceiling). With a 10 percent waste buffer, that is about 475 sq ft, which works out to 15 sheets of 4 by 8 drywall or 10 sheets of 4 by 12. Add a couple extra sheets if you have lots of doors, windows, or corners.
Use 1 1/4 inch screws for single-layer drywall on wood studs, and 1 5/8 inch screws for single-layer on metal studs or for double-layer work. The rule is the screw needs to bite at least 5/8 inch into the framing. For ceilings, use 1 5/8 inch screws even on wood studs because the ceiling carries more load and needs the extra grip.
A regular drill works fine for a small job. A drywall screw gun or a dimpler bit attachment saves your wrist and keeps every screw dimpled just right instead of breaking the paper face. For one room, a dimpler bit on your drill is the right call. For a whole basement, rent or buy the screw gun.
Pre-mixed all-purpose compound takes 18 to 24 hours to dry in normal conditions, and longer if the room is cold or humid. Setting-type hot mud sets in 20, 45, 60, or 90 minutes by chemical reaction, but you still need to let it cure before sanding. Never rush drying with a heater pointed at the wall; it will crack.
Level 4 is the standard finish for most painted rooms: three coats of mud over tape and screws, then sanded. Level 5 adds a thin skim coat of topping compound over the entire wall, which hides the difference between the paper face and the mud under flat or glossy paint. If you are using flat or eggshell paint, Level 4 is fine. If you are using satin, semi-gloss, or gloss paint, go to Level 5 or the joints will flash.
Yes, and many pros prefer it for the taping coat because it sets hard and shrinks less. The trick is to use 90-minute mud for the taping coat so you have working time, then switch to all-purpose or topping for the fill and top coats. Hot mud is harder to sand, so do not use it for the top coat unless you want a long sanding session.
Two options: a pole sander with a vacuum attachment that sucks the dust as you sand, or a drywall sanding screen on a pole with the room sealed off and a box fan blowing out a window. Wear a P100 respirator either way. Never sand without eye and lung protection; drywall dust is fine enough to get deep into your lungs.
Green board is moisture-resistant, not waterproof. It is fine for bathroom walls outside the shower and tub surround, but never use it inside a shower or as a tile backer. For shower walls, use cement board or a foam tile backer board. For the rest of the bathroom, green board is the right call.
