The number one rot pattern I tear out is joists rotting from the top down. The top of a joist is the one surface that never dries: every rain, water runs through the board gaps and sits on the joist top, trapped between the joist and the decking. Untaped, that wet line rots the joist from the top while the rest of the frame looks fine.
The fix is a strip of peel-and-stick bitumen flashing tape along the top of every joist before the first board goes down. It sheds the water off the sides, it seals around every screw hole, and it costs less than one deck board per joist. Framing without joist tape is borrowing rot from the future, and the interest rate is a full re-frame. Every piece of lumber has a crown, a slight bow along its length. Sight down the edge of each joist before you hang it and install it crown-up. Under the weight of the decking and people, a crowned joist settles flat; a joist hung crown-down stays dipped and holds a puddle for the life of the deck.
The same drainage thinking runs through the whole frame: slope the frame 1/8″ per foot away from the house so water runs off instead of pooling against the siding, and leave the gap between the first board and the ledger open so water has an exit. Pressure-treated wood is cheap on day one and expensive every spring after: sand, clean, reseal every two to three years, replace the occasional cupped or split board, and watch the fastener heads pop after hard winters. Composite costs two to three times more up front and gives you back those springs, but it is not maintenance-free — it fades, it scratches, and it needs 12″ joist spacing because it flexes more than wood, which many first-time buyers discover after framing at 16″.
Run the ten-year math honestly: composite purchase plus framing versus wood purchase plus stain, sealant, and the hours of your springs. On a small deck the difference is smaller than people expect; on a big deck it is real. Screw pops are almost always movement, not bad screws. Wet pressure-treated lumber shrinks as it dries, and freeze-thaw cycles heave boards up and down season after season. The screw holds, the board moves, and the head walks up. Boards installed bark-side down cup as they dry and lever the screws out even faster, which is why you check the growth rings and install bark-side up.
The fixes stack: use structural deck screws with the right head and thread for exterior framing, pre-drill within two inches of board ends so the board does not split and lever, keep the board gaps consistent so boards can move without fighting each other, and let pressure-treated wood dry before you seal it so the movement settles before you lock the finish down. A popped screw is the deck telling you where it moves — listen to it before the board cracks instead.
When the deck runs longer than your board length, end joints land on joists, and joints that line up in a row across the deck act like a hinge — the floor flexes along that line and the joints open first. Stagger them. A three-board running stagger works well: start row one with a full board, row two with a two-thirds cutoff, row three with a one-third cutoff, then repeat.
Keep every end joint on a joist, never floating between joists, and never put two joints on the same joist bay in adjacent rows. With standard 5.5″-wide boards and a 1/8″ gap running the 16-foot direction, each board covers about 0.47 ft of deck width, so a 12-foot-wide deck takes roughly 26 boards. Add the standard 10% waste allowance and buy 29. Wider boards, tighter gaps, or diagonal layouts change the count, which is what this calculator handles.
No. Composite is heavier and more flexible than wood, and nearly every manufacturer requires 12″ on-center joist spacing. At 16″ the boards flex between joists, bounce underfoot, and sagging framed that way is typically not covered by warranty. If the frame already exists at 16″, sister in joists to bring it to 12″ before laying composite.
Yes, within about two inches of a board end, pre-drill. End grain splits easily, and a split board end is a wasted board. Modern structural deck screws with auger points reduce splitting, but near the ends pre-drilling is still the safe habit, especially with cedar and the ends of pressure-treated boards.
Until the wood accepts water, not until a calendar date. Pressure-treated lumber ships wet, and stain over wet wood peels in one season. Flick water on the boards: if it soaks in within a few minutes, the wood is ready. Depending on weather that can be a few weeks to a few months; kiln-dried-after-treatment boards are ready much sooner.
Deck screws are hardened, corrosion-coated, and threaded aggressively with a head that seats flush without crushing the fibers; structural versions are rated for framing loads. Standard interior wood screws are brittle and corrode outdoors, and drywall screws snap under the freeze-thaw cycling a deck lives through. Use screws rated for exterior structural use.
In any climate with freezing winters, yes. Water in the soil freezes, expands, and lifts footings, and a lifted footing lifts posts, twists frames, and cracks the deck loose from the ledger. Your local building department publishes the required depth, and it is one of the first things an inspector checks. Pouring above the frost line is the most expensive shortcut in deck building.
Composite cut ends show the core material, so plan the layout to hide them. Picture-frame the perimeter with boards running the long direction, install fascia boards over the rim joists, or use manufacturer end caps on exposed ends. Layout first, cut second, and keep cut ends against the house or under the fascia.
Joist size is set by the span, the spacing, and the species, and the only authoritative answer is your local span table. As a rough feel at 16″ OC, 2x6 spans roughly 9 ft, 2x8 about 12 ft, and 2x10 about 15 ft, but species and grade change those numbers.
