    What these numbers mean

    What is a BTU?

    A British Thermal Unit measures heat energy. In air conditioning, BTU/hour tells you how much heat the unit can remove from your room each hour. A bigger room, more sun, more people, and more appliances all add heat — so they need a higher BTU rating to stay comfortable. Your “adjusted BTU” number is the cooling capacity you should shop for.

    What is Tonnage?

    Tonnage is just BTU in bigger units: 1 ton = 12,000 BTU. It comes from the old days of ice-based cooling. Mini-splits are usually sold as 0.75-ton (9,000 BTU), 1-ton (12,000), 1.5-ton (18,000), and 2-ton (24,000) units. When a product page says “12k,” that means 12,000 BTU — a 1-ton system.
