Why Your Shed Floor is Rotting (And How Gravel Fixes It)
Almost every rotting shed floor we get called to rebuild has the same story: the skids were laid right on the grass, and for two summers it looked fine. Soil holds moisture like a sponge. That moisture wicks up into wood through capillary action, rain or shine, and the underside of your floor framing stays damp from March to November. By year three the skids are soft, the joist ends crumble when you screw into them, and the whole shed leans because one corner sank into the mud.
Gravel breaks the cycle. A 4-inch bed of crushed stone drains water away instead of holding it, and concrete blocks on top of that bed lift the wood another few inches out of the splash zone. The bonus nobody thinks about: the gravel gap keeps your weed whacker away from the bottom siding. We see shredded siding on half the sheds sitting on dirt, because grass grows right up against the wall and somebody has to trim it. Give the shed a gravel apron and the floor and the siding both live twice as long.
The "Bounce" Test: Why 24-Inch Joist Spacing Ruins Shed Floors
Stand in the middle of a shed floor built on 24-inch joists and stomp once. If the floor answers back with a soft trampoline bounce, you already know what the tools will feel like rolling across it. Floor stiffness is a span game: double the spacing between joists and the plywood deflects roughly four times as much under the same load. That is why a floor that felt fine empty turns spongy the day a 500-pound riding mower rolls in.
For any shed that will hold a mower, pallets, or a workbench with real weight, frame at 12 inches on center with 3/4-inch tongue-and-groove plywood. The T&G edges lock sheets together so a wheel load spreads to the next joist instead of flexing one sheet. The lumber upcharge on a 10x12 floor is small. Fixing a bouncy finished floor means tearing the decking off, and nobody ever does it twice.
How to Level a Shed on a Sloped Yard Using Concrete Blocks
Most backyards are not level, and that is exactly what deck blocks are for. On a slope, you dig deeper on the high side and stack blocks on the low side — a solid block plus a half block, or two solids, until every skid lands in the same plane. Never shim more than about an inch with anything; bigger gaps get a taller block, not a sandwich of wood scraps that rots and compresses.
The tool that matters is a long straight board with a level on top, spanning skid to skid. Check each skid, then check across them. When the bubbles settle, measure the diagonals of the skid frame corner to corner. If the two numbers match within a quarter inch, you are square. Do this before framing a single wall. Doors that will not latch, walls that rack, and roof panels that miss by an inch almost all trace back to a foundation that was never squared on day one.
Standard vs. Pressure-Treated Plywood: Is the Upcharge Worth It?
Standard interior plywood on a shed floor fails in a very specific way: the edges swell. Every sheet has four cut edges where the glue lines are exposed, and those edges drink moisture like straws. A few seasons of damp air and one leaked rainstorm later, the floor feels spongy underfoot and the seams ridge up. Exterior CDX does better, but it still sits a few inches off wet ground.
Pressure-treated sheathing costs more per sheet and it is heavier to haul, but it shrugs off the exact conditions a shed floor lives in: ground moisture, condensation, and the rain that blows in under the door. If the budget will not stretch, use 3/4-inch CDX, paint all four edges of every sheet before it goes down, and keep the finished floor at least 4 inches above grade. If it will stretch, buy treated and never think about the floor again.
Why You Must Stagger Your Plywood Seams Like a Brick Wall
Lay four sheets of plywood in a row with all the end seams lined up and you have built a hinge. A continuous seam is a straight line of weakness where the floor can flex, crack, and eventually split right through the screw line. Stagger end joints by at least one joist space, the way bricks stagger in a wall, and each sheet locks its neighbors in place. On a shed floor the easy rhythm is: start the first row with a full sheet, the second row with a half sheet, and alternate.
Two more habits separate a pro floor from a weekend wobble. Keep every end seam centered on a joist so both sheet edges have wood to bite. And leave a 1/8-inch gap at every sheet edge — a nail shank or a shim works as a spacer. Plywood swells in summer humidity, and sheets laid tight against each other will push until the seams buckle upward. Screw on a 6-inch pattern along edges and 12 inches in the field, and the floor stays flat and quiet for decades.
