    Why inseam matters more than height

    Two riders can both be 178 cm tall and have 6 cm of difference in leg length. Saddle height, frame size, and standover clearance all hinge on leg length — not total height. That is why professional fitters start with the inseam: it sets the dimensions that actually touch your body, while height only fine-tunes reach. Measuring once with the book method beats every generic height chart.

    The LeMond formula: inseam × 0.883

    Popularized by Tour de France winner Greg LeMond, this formula sets saddle height at 88.3% of your inseam, measured from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the saddle. It lands most riders in the sweet spot: enough leg extension for power, enough knee bend to stay safe. Start here, then adjust a few millimeters at a time based on how your knees feel.

    Stack and reach, in one sentence each

    Stack is how high the front of the frame sits above the bottom bracket; reach is how far forward it sits. Together they describe a bike’s true riding position regardless of seat tube length, which makes them the cleanest way to compare two frames.       Forget your jeans size — the cycling inseam is its own measurement. Stand barefoot with your back against a wall on a hard floor, wearing the shorts you ride in. Slide a hardcover book between your legs, spine against the wall, and pull it up snugly so it sits the way a saddle would. Keep it perfectly level, then have a friend measure from the top edge of the book straight down to the floor. Take it twice; if the numbers differ, take a third. This single number drives your saddle height, your frame size, and your standover safety margin.

      The LeMond Formula: The Gold Standard for Saddle Height

      Multiply your inseam (cm) by 0.883 and you get your saddle height in centimeters, measured from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the saddle along the seat tube’s angle. It works because 88.3% of inseam leaves the knee with a healthy bend at the bottom of the stroke — enough extension for efficient power without the rocking and behind-the-knee pain of a saddle set too high. Set it with a tape measure, ride for a week, then fine-tune in 2–3 mm steps. Knee in front hurting? Lower it. Behind? Raise it.

      Road vs. MTB Geometry: Why Sizing is Different

      Road bikes are sized by seat tube length in centimeters (a 56 cm frame), while mountain bikes use inches or S/M/L because their seat tubes are short and their geometry is built around reach and wheel size instead. MTBs need standover room for dismounts and dropper posts, so the formula scales differently (inseam × ~0.57, converted to inches).       Most common cycling aches map to a small number of fit errors. Pain in front of the knee: saddle too low or too far forward. Pain behind the knee or rocking hips: saddle too high. Numb hands or sore neck: too much weight forward — raise the bars with spacers or shorten the stem. Lower back ache: reach too long or drop too low for your flexibility — choose a more upright style setting here and rebuild the cockpit around it. Two bikes with very different frames can share the exact same saddle height measurement, which makes it the universal standard for transferring your fit between bikes.

      How do I know if my bike frame is too big or too small?

      A frame that is too big stretches you out: locked elbows, a neck craned up, tight standover clearance, and a cockpit you can only shorten so much with the stem.       Should my leg fully extend when pedaling?

      How does cycling shoe cleat position affect my fit?

      Cleats change where your foot sits relative to the pedal axle, which changes your effective leg length and knee tracking. Moving a cleat forward effectively lengthens your reach to the pedal; moving it back shortens it. Rotation matters too: feet that point naturally inward or outward need the cleats rotated to match, or knees track sideways and get sore. Set saddle height first, then fine-tune cleats, then re-check comfort.

      What is the difference between stack and reach?

      Stack is the vertical distance from the bottom bracket to the top of the head tube; reach is the horizontal distance from the bottom bracket to the head tube.       Can I fix a bike that is slightly too big by changing the stem?

      Partly. A stem 10–20 mm shorter, and flipped to raise the bars, can rescue a frame that is one step too long, and spacers can add bar height. But a stem cannot fix standover clearance, weight distribution, or a cockpit that goes twitchy when it gets very short. If you are more than one size off, or the standover check fails, the honest answer is a different frame.
