The old rule treats a 6-inch angelfish and six 1-inch neon tetras as equals, and it ignores everything that actually pollutes water: body mass, metabolism, and waste output. A single fancy goldfish produces more ammonia than twenty small tetras. Modern stocking uses a bioload approach — weight each fish by adult size and messiness, then compare the total against your real water volume. It is still a simplification (behavior, territory, and water parameters matter too), but it beats linear inches every time. And it always starts with the true volume, not the label.
Start with the glass: length × width × height ÷ 231 gives gallons (231 cubic inches per gallon). Then subtract displacement. Your substrate layer removes length × width × substrate depth ÷ 231 gallons. Rocks and driftwood are irregular, so estimate them as a percentage — about 15% of what is left is typical for a decorated tank, 5% for a sparse one, up to 25% for a heavily aquascaped build. The remainder is the number you should stock, heat, filter, and dose for. A labeled 20-gallon commonly lands at 16–17 gallons after this math.
GPH — gallons per hour — tells you how much water a filter moves. Divide it by your actual tank volume and you get turnover. Aim for roughly 4× for light stock (shrimp, bettas, nano fish), 6× for typical communities, and 8–10× for messy animals like goldfish, cichlids, and turtles. Two caveats: manufacturer ratings assume clean media and zero lift height, so real flow runs lower, and some species (bettas, long-finned fish) dislike strong currents — baffle the outflow rather than under-filtering. Media volume matters as much as flow, since that is where your bacteria live.
Set up the tank, run the filter and heater, and introduce an ammonia source — fish food, pure ammonia, or a bottled starter. Within a week or two, bacteria begin converting ammonia to nitrite; a second wave of bacteria then handles nitrite, converting it to nitrate. You are “cycled” when your test kit shows 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and measurable nitrate within 24 hours of dosing — usually 4 to 6 weeks in. Then add fish slowly, a few at a time, so the bacteria colony can grow to match the new load. Skipping or rushing this step is the most common cause of dead fish in new tanks.
Heater sizing is about the temperature gap, not just tank size. Find the difference between your target water temperature and the coolest your room gets. Small gaps (up to 5°F) need about 2 watts per gallon; moderate gaps (up to 10°F) about 3 watts per gallon; big gaps about 5 watts per gallon. Apply that to your actual water volume and round up to the nearest standard size — 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, or 300 W. For tanks above 55 gallons in cold rooms, two smaller heaters beat one big one: redundancy if one fails, and gentler, more even heating.
A 55-gallon tank filled with water weighs roughly 460 pounds from water alone, since water weighs 8.34 pounds per gallon. Add glass, substrate, and rock, and the total commonly reaches 500 to 620 pounds. Make sure the stand is rated for it and the floor can support the load, especially in older homes or on upper floors.
It is not recommended. Bowls are too small to keep temperature and water quality stable, and they cannot hold a heater or filter properly. Bettas do best in at least 5 gallons with a gentle filter, a heater set near 78°F, and regular water changes. A stable 5-gallon setup is easier to maintain than a bowl, not harder.
It depends on how warm your room is compared to your target tank temperature. If the difference is 5°F or less, plan about 2 watts per gallon; up to 10°F, about 3 watts per gallon; more than that, about 5. For a 20-gallon tank with about 15–17 actual gallons of water and an 8°F difference, that works out near 50 watts. This calculator runs the exact math with displacement included.
Match turnover to your stock. Light livestock like shrimp, bettas, and nano fish do well around 4× the tank volume per hour. Medium community fish like tetras and corydoras prefer about 6×. Messy stock like goldfish, cichlids, and turtles want 8–10×. Base the number on your actual water volume, not the label on the tank.
White or gray cloudiness after adding fish is usually a bacterial bloom, often because the tank was not fully cycled or too many fish were added at once — the bacteria are responding to ammonia. Test your water, reduce feeding, avoid over-cleaning the filter media, and never rinse media in chlorinated tap water. If ammonia or nitrite reads above zero, do partial water changes and consider a detoxifier.
If you keep tropical fish, yes. Most popular community fish — including bettas, tetras, and angelfish — prefer 76–80°F, and 72 is below that range. Room temperature also dips at night and in winter, which stresses fish. Only true coldwater species, like white cloud mountain minnows, can comfortably skip a heater.
Aim for a depth of about 2–3 inches for rooted plants. As a rough guide, that works out to around 1 pound of gravel per gallon of tank, or a bit less for sand. This calculator estimates your substrate volume from your tank footprint and chosen depth so you can buy the right amount.
A HOB filter hangs on the back of the tank, is affordable, and is easy to maintain — great for tanks up to about 40 gallons and lighter stock. A canister filter sits in the cabinet below, holds far more media, runs quietly, and pushes higher flow, which suits large tanks, messy fish, and planted setups. Canisters cost more and take longer to clean. Many keepers run both on big tanks.
